Sunny Day with Friends on the Golf Course

We can't think of a better way to end a great week than a perfect fall day of fun with fellow pork producers. On this beautiful October Friday, dozens of members and friends have enjoyed camaraderie at the annual “Oklahoma Pork Open" Golf Tournament in Hennessey. Twenty teams representing a diverse cross-section of our state's pork industry just finished their runs through 18 holes over the past several hours.

Highlights of our special golf day include perfect fall weather, a delicious pork lunch catered by Head Country BBQ, epic Oklahoma Pork prizes including awesome "wrestling style" championship belts, and countless laughs with friends across the industry.

Award winners from the 2025 Oklahoma Pork Open include:

Award Spotlight: House Speaker Kyle Hilbert

Although many state legislators are proud of Oklahoma's agriculture sector, there are only a select few who work to truly champion our industry alongside producers and wholeheartedly defend what we do to feed the world. For our policy team at the Oklahoma Pork Council, we are incredibly grateful to have one of those leaders advocating for pork producers as State Speaker of the House.

Because of this years-long positive relationship with Speaker Hilbert and his impressive work in support of swine production during the most recent legislative session, Oklahoma Pork's board voted earlier this year to honor him with our "Outstanding Legislator Award" at the Oklahoma Pork Congress.

In January 2025, State Representative Kyle Hilbert was elected by his peers to serve as the youngest Speaker of the House in Oklahoma history. During his eight-year legislative tenure prior to becoming Speaker, Representative Hilbert authored more than 40 bills that were signed into law. His district covers portions of Creek and Tulsa counties, including his childhood hometown of Depew, and, the community of Bristow, where he now resides with his wife and young family. Growing up in Depew, Representative Hilbert was active in FFA, including showing pigs and serving as a State FFA Officer. He earned both a Bachelor’s in Agribusiness and a Master’s in Business Administration from Oklahoma State University.

On behalf of our entire industry, we celebrate an authentic friend to agriculture - Oklahoma Speaker Kyle Hilbert. Click here or the embedded link above to watch Speaker Hilbert's heartfelt award video that debuted during the 2025 Pork Congress!

Sparking Interest in Veterinary Careers

If you have spent much time with the Oklahoma Pork Council, you know recruiting the next generation of pork producers ranks toward the very top of our priority list. During the past few weeks, our organization enjoyed two fun-filled opportunities to start that recruiting early for a critical role within our industry: veterinary medicine.

Over the past three years, the Oklahoma Pork Council has refined our role assisting with the Oklahoma State Fair and Tulsa State Fair "ExpOSUre: Livestock Docs" workshops led by the Oklahoma Department of Agriculture, Food and Forestry (ODAFF), the Oklahoma State University College of Veterinary Medicine (OSU-CVM), and the Oklahoma Veterinary Medicine Association (OVMA). "ExpOSUre" aims to connect mostly elementary and middle school students attending the fairs with several hands-on activities to spark their interest in animal health careers like veterinary medicine.

For the Oklahoma Pork Council, the ExpOSUre workshops have also served as the perfect platforms to engage with a broad audience of children about important topics like swine biosecurity, commercial production careers, and our organization's role serving Oklahoma's pork producers. Between the Oklahoma City workshop earlier this month and the one held today at the Tulsa State Fair, this Oklahoma Pork education pitch has been heard by almost 100 young people with a passion for livestock - many of whom have not otherwise connected with Oklahoma Pork.

Industry Award Spotlight: Jeremy Dickinson

When deemed appropriate by our board of directors, the Oklahoma Pork Council presents a career achievement recognition known as the Golden Pig Award. This accolade is reserved for leaders who exhibit a longstanding example of character, knowledge, and dedication within pork production. For 2025, two producers who recently finished their distinguished pork production careers were presented the Golden Pig Award at last month's Oklahoma Pork Congress.

Raised in Colcord, Oklahoma, Jeremy Dickinson’s passion for production agriculture was ignited through a multi-generational family connection to farming. He began his pork industry career more than 25 years ago, with an emphasis on animal performance and animal welfare.

During his tenure at Tyson Foods, Jeremy played a key role in enhancing pork production through innovation, efficiency, and people-focused leadership. Recently retiring from his most recent role as Tyson’s Vice President of Live Hogs, Jeremy has dedicated his professional life to advancing the swine industry while navigating complex operational challenges. He is known for having a heart for doing good work alongside great people, with a decades-long commitment to his family and community.

Although Jeremy has moved into a new chapter of life, he remains committed to continued progress within pork production and supporting the next generation of agricultural leaders. The Oklahoma Pork Council thanks Jeremy Dickinson for many years of hard work and leadership in Oklahoma's swine industry. We will continue to highlight our 2025 award winners for the next few weeks, but click here to check out the full list if you were not able to join us at August's Oklahoma Pork Congress!

Introducing New Board Member Hannah Trujillo

Last month, board elections at the Oklahoma Pork Congress brought a brand new face to Oklahoma Pork's producer leadership team. After several years participating in Oklahoma Pork events, Tyson Foods' Hannah Trujillo decided to step out of her comfort zone and run for an open board seat representing the East District for the next three years. During our annual business meeting, her election became official, and we are excited to now have Hannah as part of Oklahoma Pork's incredible group of industry professionals who guide our organization.

Hannah Trujillo of Wetumka has spent nearly a decade working in Oklahoma’s pork industry. Her love for raising pigs began during a production internship in college and has continued to grow alongside her career. Hannah holds an associate’s degree from Northeastern Oklahoma A&M College and a bachelor’s degree in Animal Science from Oklahoma State University. She has gained experience working for both Seaboard Foods and Tyson Foods over the past 10 years, and she currently serves as the senior supervisor at Tyson’s genetic nucleus farm in Oklahoma. Hannah is proud to be part of the close-knit culture within pork production, and she believes there is no more fulfilling career than being a good steward of animals and land.

When asked what she would like to share with our state's pork producers as she embraces this new adventure, Hannah said, “I am honored and proud to represent Oklahoma farmers in my role on the board. In addition to having a love for our land and animals, farmers love the people around us. The opportunity to serve and give back in our communities with the Oklahoma Pork Council is something I am truly grateful for.”

If she is not on the farm, you can find Hannah spending quality time with her four children or long distance running. On behalf of Hannah's fellow board members and our Oklahoma Pork staff, we look forward to working with her throughout the next three years

Biosecurity Education for Tulsa State Fair

Over the next week, countless young people showing pigs at the Tulsa State Fair will receive helpful biosecurity advice through a brand new round of our popular Oklahoma Pork Council student exhibitor videos for fall 2025.

Building on the past success of these peer-to-peer social media videos, swine exhibitors will see simple, effective precautions demonstrated by their peers who are working to safely raise their animals free from disease. The impactful student interviews are part of Oklahoma Pork's continued education effort to remind swine exhibition families of their duty to help keep herds healthy as part of Oklahoma's larger pork industry.

The first video in the latest series debuted this week featuring Porter 4-H member Farrah Dupree, who discusses steps she takes before a livestock show to limit the spread of germs. Examples shared include monitoring her animals for disease, thoroughly disinfecting equipment, and washing her hands between interactions with different show pigs. The Oklahoma Pork Council and videography partner Cade Childers of C3 Designs will debut two more student biosecurity videos throughout the Tulsa State Fair, including one focused on best practices for herd health during the show, and a final video outlining protocols for swine exhibitors once they are headed home.

In addition to the educational video series during the Tulsa State Fair, Oklahoma Pork's Matti Carlile will return as a member of the Tulsa State Fair Swine Committee throughout the gilt and barrow shows and assist show officials monitoring animals for signs of disease among other duties to make the pig show successful. Visit the Oklahoma Pork Council Facebook page over the next week to see more of our biosecurity messaging to swine exhibitors at the Tulsa State Fair!

Industry Award Spotlight: Conley Nelson

From time to time, the Oklahoma Pork Council presents a career achievement recognition known as the Golden Pig Award. This accolade is reserved for leaders who exhibit a longstanding example of character, knowledge, and dedication within pork production. For 2025, two producers who recently finished their distinguished pork production careers were presented the Golden Pig Award at last month's Oklahoma Pork Congress.

Conley Nelson grew up in Goldfield, Iowa, where he still owns a 4,400 head wean-to-finish hog operation and his family’s Century Farm. He began his pork industry career working for Plainview Hogs before the company was purchased by Murphy Family Farms in 1986. Throughout the last four decades, Conley fulfilled various roles within the company amidst mergers and significant changes in the pork industry. Most recently, Conley served as Smithfield Foods’ Midwest General Manager overseeing sow operations, employees, and contract finishing sites throughout Iowa, Oklahoma, Colorado, Missouri, South Dakota, and Utah.

In addition to his success within the Smithfield Foods system, Conley has passionately served the broader industry and his local community for decades. He previously served as president of the National Pork Board and chairman of the U.S. Meat Export Federation. After more than 40 years of dedicated leadership within the U.S. pork industry, Conley retired from Smithfield Foods in June.

Congratulations to Conley Nelson on his retirement and this special honor from his peers! Keep following along as we highlight all our 2025 award winners this fall. To check out the full list now, see this Pork Congress awards story in Farm Journal's Pork.

State Fair Highlights Pigs and Pork to Thousands

Without question, the State Fair of Oklahoma features quite a few reasons for pork producers to celebrate: quirky pork snacks for fairgoers to enjoy, a swine show starring 4-H and FFA members with their pigs, the AGtropolis animal birthing center, workshops for young people interested in animal careers, and much more. In many ways, the State Fair continues its original purpose of showcasing agriculture and rural traditions very well.

The Oklahoma Pork Council staff also enjoyed visiting the fair to proactively share positive stories about two of our favorite things: pigs and pork! We spent time at the Oklahoma Veterinary Medical Association (OVMA) birthing center watching countless fairgoers see with their own eyes the incredible reality of modern pig farming. We also helped facilitate constructive media attention for the birthing center, including an OKC influencer "Tiffany in OKC" visit and a promotional story on KOCO 5 News featuring footage captured by Oklahoma Pork's Shay Stegmann.

No visit to the fairgrounds is complete without taste-testing pork treats, so our staff also took time to scope out dozens of pork offerings for any appetite. Whether fairgoers are craving BBQ, breakfast food, or about anything covered in bacon - there is no shortage of memorable pork dishes available. Make sure you are well hydrated for the heat and put on your stretchy pants to go see for yourself before the fair wraps up this Sunday, September 21. Click here to see more photos of our favorite pork finds on Oklahoma Pork's Facebook page!

Celebrating Excellence: Hugo Hidalgo Pacheco

In 2018, the Oklahoma Pork Council Excellence Award was established to recognize those pork producers who have made the daily work of raising pigs more than just a job, but a passionate calling to take care of their animals and the people around them. This award covers all sectors of pork production, and it rewards those outstanding producers who excel in at least one of Oklahoma Pork’s four strategic intentions.

Hugo Hidalgo Pacheco began his career with The HANOR Company in 2016 as part of the T.N. Visa Program. After first working for HANOR in North Carolina, Hugo transitioned to farms in Mooreland, Oklahoma, where he has gained extensive experience across the business for the past decade.

As compliance manager, Hugo oversees adherence to production practices, employee compliance with PQA+ standards, and fulfillment of animal well-being standards. In this role, Hugo is a constant encourager of everyone on the team.

He is known among his HANOR colleagues for being proactive, dedicated, and humble.
